At the same volume
David gets his signature, midrangey guitar sound from a 1935 Epiphone Olympic archtop with a carved top and plywood mahogany back and sides. He likens its sound to that of a resophonic guitar. "I bought it without a bridge," he says, "and had a one-piece mahogany bridge made for it. I think with a top this small it really behooves you to get as much stuff touching the top as you can, because the top doesn’t have that much flex to it." He says his guitar is unique in that every note on every string plays at the same volume. "It doesn’t have any dead spots or any high spots—which is very, very strange," he says. "It makes it fun to play lead, because you don’t have to worry where you’re at. It’s not much of a solo instrument, but I can’t really play by myself worth a darn, so it doesn’t make much of a difference."

Alla grandezza de’ membri
Adunque conviensi tenere certa ragione circa alla grandezza de’ membri, in quale commensuratione gioverà prima allogare ciascuno osso dell’animale, poi apresso agiugniere i suoi muscoli, di poi tutto vestirlo di sue carne. Ma qui sarà che mi contraponga quanto di sopra dissi, che al pittore nulla s’apartiene delle cose quali non vede. Ben ramentato costoro, ma come a vestire l’uomo prima si disegnia ignudo, poi il circondiamo di panni, così dipignendo il nudo, prima pogniamo sue ossa e muscoli, quali poi così copriamo con sue carni che non sia difficile intendere ove sotto sia ciascuno moscolo. E poi che la natura ci ha porto in mezzo le misure, ove si truova non poca utilità a riconoscierle dalla natura, ivi adunque pillino li studiosi pittori questa faticha, per tanto tenere a mente quello che pillino dalla natura, quanto a riconoscerle aranno posto suo studio e opera.

"Like church bells"
We could only afford cheap guitars, and cheap guitars sounded like cheap guitars. But with weird tunings or something jammed under a particular fret, those humble instruments could sound rather amazing—bang a drumstick on a cheap Japanese Stratocaster copy in the right tuning, crank the amplifier to within an inch of its life, and it will sound like church bells.

Rothko comments
The set of colossal canvases housed in Tate Modern's Rothko Room originated, as every art-aware schoolboy knows, in a commission for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building on New York's Park Avenue. The commission, one of the more remarkable instances of incongruity in the history of art patronage, was for 600 square feet of mural-sized paintings to decorate the walls of the restaurant - "a place," according to Rothko, "where the richest bastards in New York will come to feed and show off" - although it is not clear if Rothko realised from the outset that his paintings were intended as a backdrop for fine dining. The architect Philip Johnson, who assisted Mies van der Rohe in the design of the building and who was chief commissioner of the Rothko murals, always insisted that the painter knew that they were to be hung in the restaurant.
"I accepted this assignment as a challenge, with strictly malicious intentions. I hope to paint something that will ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever eats in that room. If the restaurant would refuse to put up my murals, that would be the ultimate compliment. But they won't. People can stand anything these days."

Away from Mussoorie
At night the room was very dark and the wide window showed the whole southern sky, and into this room one night came – with a great deal of fluttering – a bird. Turning on the light and getting out of bed one saw it under the bed. It was an owl. It was about a foot and a half high with extremely wide big eyes and a fearsome beak. We gazed at each other quite close, a few feet apart. It was frightened by the light and the closeness of human being. We looked at each other without blinking for quite a while, and it never lost its height and its fierce dignity. You could see the cruel claws, the light feathers and the wings tightly held against the body. One would have liked to touch it, stroke it, but it would have not allowed that. So presently the light was turned out and for some time there was quietness in the room. Soon there was a fluttering of the wings – you could feel the air against your face – and the owl had gone out of the window. It never came again.

Rothko comments
In 1959, on holiday in Italy, Mark Rothko went with his wife Mell and their eight-year-old daughter Kate for a day's visit to the Graeco-Roman city of Paestum on the Amalfi coast south of Naples. Paestum boasts three Doric temples generally agreed to be among the best preserved of their kind in the world. The Rothkos were travelling with another family, that of John Hurt Fischer, an editor at Harper's Magazine whom the painter had met on the sea journey from New York. Rothko had already visited Pompeii and had felt a "deep affinity" between his own painting and the murals in the House of Mysteries there, in which he recognised "the same feeling, the same broad expanses of sombre colour" - and anyone who has seen the House of Mysteries will certainly agree with this judgment, for the similarities with the work he was doing then are uncanny, given that Rothko had painted a number of murals that were eventually to be housed in Tate's Rothko Room, before he visited Pompeii. Now, at Paestum, he was similarly struck by the modelling of the temples, at once groundedly monumental and celestially lightsome, and wholly mysterious.
On the journey down from Naples the party had fallen in with a couple of Italian youths who offered to act as guides. At Paestum, where the odd-assorted little band picnicked at noon in the Temple of Hera, the young men expressed their curiosity as to the identity and occupations of the Americans. Fischer's daughter, who was acting as interpreter, turned to Rothko and said: "I have told them that you are an artist, and they ask whether you came here to paint the temples," to which Rothko replied: "Tell them that I have been painting Greek temples all my life without knowing it."

"Fat"
The last thing I remember was that it was too late to jump, too late for the parachutes to open. That must have been a couple of seconds before hitting the ground. Luckily I was not strapped in – I always preferred free movement to safety belts… My friend was strapped in and he was atomized on impact – there was almost nothing to be found of him afterwards. But I must have shot through the windscreen as it flew back at the same speed as the plane hit the ground and that saved me, though I had bad skull and jaw injuries. Then the tail flipped over and I was completely buried in the snow. That’s how the Tartars found me days later. I remember voices saying ‘Voda’ (Water), then the felt of their tents, and the dense pungent smell of cheese, fat and milk. They covered my body in fat to help it regenerate warmth, and wrapped it in felt as an insulator to keep warmth in.

A aeronave da TAM Airbus A320, vôo JJ 3054, que partiu de Porto Alegre, às 17h16, com destino ao aeroporto de Congonhas (SP), sofreu acidente no pouso no aeroporto em São Paulo.
Neste momento não podemos determinar a extensão dos danos ou de possíveis lesões sofridas pelos ocupantes do avião, passageiros e tripulantes. Uma equipe da TAM já está no local e outros técnicos da companhia estão a caminho. A assistência de emergência também está sendo prestada pelo Corpo de Bombeiros, Infraero e outras autoridades aeronáuticas.

COMUNICADO TAM 1
A aeronave da TAM Airbus A320, vôo JJ 3054, que partiu de Porto Alegre, às 17h16, com destino ao aeroporto de Congonhas (SP), sofreu acidente no pouso no aeroporto em São Paulo.
Neste momento não podemos determinar a extensão dos danos ou de possíveis lesões sofridas pelos ocupantes do avião, passageiros e tripulantes. Uma equipe da TAM já está no local e outros técnicos da companhia estão a caminho. A assistência de emergência também está sendo prestada pelo Corpo de Bombeiros, Infraero e outras autoridades aeronáuticas.
